The Earth's energy imbalance has doubled, and it's not just about heatwaves. This is a critical issue that demands our attention and action. Personally, I think it's fascinating how a seemingly small change in the planet's energy balance can have such profound and far-reaching consequences. What makes this particularly intriguing is the interplay between human-induced climate change and natural patterns like El Niño. From my perspective, this highlights the complexity and interconnectedness of our climate system. One thing that immediately stands out is the role of the oceans. The oceans are absorbing around 90% of the excess heat, acting as a vast heat sink. However, this comes at a cost. Warmer oceans lead to stronger evaporation, making weather extremes like heatwaves, intense rainfall, and droughts more likely. This raises a deeper question: how do we balance the need to protect our oceans with the urgent need to mitigate climate change? A detail that I find especially interesting is the rate of sea level rise. Between 1901 and 2018, sea levels rose by around 1.7mm per year. In the past decade, this rate has more than doubled to over 3.6mm per year. This is a stark reminder of the accelerating pace of climate change. What this really suggests is that we are not just dealing with a one-time event, but a continuous build-up of heat in the Earth system. If you take a step back and think about it, this means that the extremes we are experiencing now will only become more frequent and intense in the future. The prospect of a strong El Niño in the very near future is a stark reminder of how natural variations in the climate system and human-caused warming can combine to produce particularly intense impacts. However, it is the steady, continuous build-up of heat in the Earth system that will shape the decades ahead. In my opinion, this highlights the importance of taking action now to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reach net zero. The key point is that as long as more heat enters the Earth system than leaves it, temperatures will continue to rise. Until we bring the planet back into balance, that heat will keep building. And as it does, the extremes we are experiencing now will only become more frequent, more intense, and harder to manage. Personally, I believe that this is a call to action for all of us. We must take responsibility for our actions and work together to create a more sustainable future. Only then can we hope to mitigate the impacts of climate change and protect our planet for future generations.
